Certified Courses for Professional Trainers

Dog owners seeking professional training for themselves and their dogs deserve to have access to a system of recognition and accountability for professionals in the business. The Kennel Club Accreditation Scheme for Instructors in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour has, slowly, evolved into a comprehensive curriculum of self assessment processes to categorise trainers and behaviourists. This should provide an umbrella system that gives equality of status between the variety of fields, standards and personal interests. But we still need more opportunities to learn good quality teaching skills and dog training protocols.

Dogs have always deserved our very best education. And no less they deserve the people in charge of their learning and welfare to be professional in their approach, education and quality of service.

The Certification scheme has been introduced from the demands of students and clients who have expressed a need for a comprehensive teaching program that incorporates a clear educational pathway and provides a structure based on the very best dog training protocols.

It provides:

  • A comprehensive range of courses in training specific groups of people and dogs
  • A comprehensive range of courses in good teaching practice for class or individuals
  • A supportive network of professionals
  • Regular opportunities for personal and professional development
  • Quality Assurance program of teaching and standards
  • Recognition of achievement
  • Structured study route, with mentor support
  • Business development opportunities

The Scheme has been developed by very experienced and qualified teachers: Kay Laurence (Cert Ed) and Helen Phillips (FETC). With a background in course development, through Open College Network, City & Guilds, Teaching in Further Education and Assessment Programs in a variety of activities the Certification scheme will combine the very best of good adult teaching and highest standard of training dogs.

It is ideal for anyone wishing to develop a career in dog training or as a support to those already teaching. Participants will range from people interested in teaching individuals to full time businesses employing several teachers, trainers and associated professionals.

Accreditation for prior learning (APL) and prior achievement (APA) will be recognised, and credit given towards the Kennel Club Scheme for Accredited Instructors in Training and Behaviour.

Learning About Dogs Certification Scheme operates in three areas:

A: on a personal level, certifying knowledge, skills and understanding of specific training skills with your own dog. Awards both for yourself and for your dog.
    LADs Personal Assessment Scheme

B: as a provider of advice on training, management and behaviour through a professional business teaching people with dogs.
    LADs Teaching Diploma

C: as an assistant within a professional business.
    LADs Teaching Certificate
